Abstract

Given the cultural and socioeconomic importance of Mazatlán, Sinaloa, and the national relevance of its fisheries, the Pacific sierra, commonly known by its scientific name Scomberomorus sierra, this article presents a synthesis of the species’ biology, the history of its fishery, and its importance in local gastronomy, as well as several aspects related to the current management of the fishery. This general overview allows readers to become familiar with the Pacific sierra as a valuable fishery resource, to understand its economic importance at the national level, and to appreciate its culinary relevance. In addition, it offers a brief reflection on the future of the species and its fisheries, emphasizing the need for sustainable management to ensure its conservation and use for future generations.
